Neill grew up in New Zealand and trained as an actor at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, Australia. He began his career in the theatre, performing in productions in Australia and New Zealand, before making his feature film debut in the New Zealand film ‘Sleeping Dogs’ in 1977.
Neill’s breakthrough role came in 1981, when he played the lead in the Australian film ‘My Brilliant Career’. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning Neill international recognition and leading to a string of high-profile roles in both Australian and Hollywood productions.
