Oprah and the Clooneys Pledge Money to Student Gun Law Protests

George Clooney and his wife Amal pledged $500,000 for the March for Our Lives, a gun control march held last March 24, 2018. Right after the Clooney pledge, Oprah Winfrey matched the couple’s donation.

Within 24 hours, other major celebrities pledged their donations for the cause and the organizations managed to raise more than $2 million. Students from Stoneman Douglas High School organized the gun control march. They want the government to make students’ lives and safety the number one priority. They also call for the end of mass shootings and gun violence in schools across the nation. They want the government to act now and protect the lives of all students in the nation.

George Clooney said that he and his wife were inspired by the courage displayed by the students who survived the shooting. He added that his family would support students from all over the United States.

Cameron Kasky started the fundraising campaign and half of the funds raised went towards covering the expenses connected with the march held in Washington, DC. Half of the funds would be used to support families and victims of the shooting through the Broward Education Foundation. Kasky was one of the students who survived the shooting at Stoneman Douglas.

Aside from Oprah and Clooney, Steven Spielberg and his wife also pledged half a million dollars to the fundraising. Spielberg said that it is important to support young students who are demonstrating their leadership skills with maturity and confidence.

The shooting in Parkland, Florida was one of the deadliest shootings in recent years. The total number of people killed was 16 and included faculty, coaches, administrator, and students. The suspected shooter was a former student of the high school. He was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder.
