The Law & Order: SVU chronicles both the lives and crises faced by the Special Victims Unit of the New York Police Department, hence the show’s title. The SVU is a squad of elite detectives whose specialty is investigating sexually based crimes. Mariska Hargitay stars as the acting commander of the unit, Lt. Olivia Benson. She co-stars along with Ice T, Kelli Giddish, Peter Scanavino, and Raul Esparaza.

For all of 19 seasons, Mariska Hargitay has played the role of Olivia Benson on Law & Order SVU. When asked by E! about fatigue, the Emmy Winner claimed that she is even more engaged than ever.

A good reason for this might be the introduction of a new show-runner in Michael Chernuchin. Chernuchin is a veteran of Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. He also had a stint as the brains behind Chicago Justice, which was short-lived. In a bold move, Michael Chernuchin deviated from the traditional SVU episode structure with the November 29 episode titled “Something Happened”, which was one of the best ways to showcase Hargitay’s Emmy-winning acting. Having essentially become a two-person play, the episode saw Hargitay’s Lt. Olivia Benson face her inner demons, embrace them, and get ready for yet another day in the office.

As of March 21, 2018, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has aired a total of 427 original episodes in its nineteen seasons on air. During that time, the show has received nominations for the Emmy Award many times, with Mariska Hargitay receiving a nomination for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category for eight straight years starting in 2004, and winning it in 2006. She has also received two Golden Globe Award nominations, winning once in 2005.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit airs every Wednesday at 9 in the evening on NBC.
