The story of Diana Hyland and John Travolta is a great love story, which turned into tragedy. Too soon.  John Travolta met Diana Hyland on the set of “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble”.  Interestingly, Diana’s character played John’s character’s mother. This was in 1976.

At first, it seemed like just flirting between the two actors.  But then Hyland confessed to Travolta that she did not care if she had him as a lover or as a friend and that just melted Travolta.  In an interview to “The Rolling Stones”, Travolta explained his relationship with Diana by saying, “I had almost decided to quit looking for anyone special, and then she came along.”

Diana Hyland made her debut in acting in 1955 at the tender age of 19 in an episode of Robert Montgomery Presents.  She then appeared in guest and supporting roles for a decade in shows like Naked Hour, The Fugitive, The Invaders, among others. In 1966 she was cast for the film the Chase with Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda, and Robert Redford.

Hyland married actor Joe Goodson in 1969 after a short relationship.  They had a child, Zachary Goodson in 1973. They divorced in 1975.  Then in 1976, 40-year-old Diana Hyland met 18-year-old John Travolta.  They fell in love and started a romantic relationship.

In a 1983 interview with the Rolling Stones, Travolta explained, “On the first meeting, I was just incredibly attracted to this woman. I saw the whole picture in her first ten words — depth, intelligence, beauty, perceptiveness. She had gone through a rough marriage, a lot of career ups and downs, and had come out at peace with herself. It was very sexy. The most important things were the relationships in her life. She really savored the people around her. At the time, I was open, just fooling around with a couple of little affairs. I had almost decided to quit looking for anyone special, and then she came along and was so dynamic, I knew I had to spend time with her.”

In 1977, only several months into their relationship, Hyland was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She underwent a mastectomy but the cancer had already spread and her health deteriorated.  They kept their romantic relationship until she died in Travolta’s arms on March 27, 1977 in Los Angeles.
